A Decade of Travel - 2
2012 – A Day in Long Island
25th January
No, this is not in New York. Long Island belongs to the
Andaman archipelago. It takes almost an entire day to reach Long Island from
Port Blair, by road and then two ferry crossings. There are no roads or
vehicles on the island. It is relatively virgin territory, untouched by
rapacious tourists. It is strictly for those who seek a meaningful communion
with nature. There is nothing do here other than walk, explore and laze around.
Our group of 20 had the entire island to ourselves. The day began with the sky
blushing to welcome the sun. I have more than 2 dozen shots of the spectacular
sunrise and cannot decide which ones to post here.
We wandered about all day, each one finding their own
private space or an object of curiosity. It is a great place to practice and hone
photographic techniques. I got tips on macrophotography from a fellow
traveller.
As the day progressed, we went to the beach. The blue of the
sky put picture postcards to shame. Leaving footprints on that virgin sad felt
blasphemous, I hesitated before following others. Beachcombing turned up
curiosities.
Soon it was dusk. And the sky blushed again, not wanting to
let her lover go. I fully concurred with her and lingered on the beach for a
long time, till enveloped by sooty darkness.
I am not telling how to get to Long Island. If you are
serious, you will take the trouble to find out yourself.
